"Good medicine treats disease.
Great medicine sees the person."
Dr. Chen

Hi there!
I'm Dr. Kuan-Yu (Kuan) Chen (he/him)!
I'm a board-certified family medicine doctor, and a die-hard New Yorker by way of Taiwan. Having grown up in both New York and Taiwan, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for both cultures. While Taiwan will always hold a special place in my heart, New York City is where I truly belong. I thrive in the city’s hustle and energy, enjoy its diverse food scene, and love crossing paths with people from all walks of life.

I also speak Mandarin fluently which helps me connect with people of different backgrounds and provide them with culture-sensitive care and ensuring that my patients feel respected, understood, and valued.

During my time working in the U.S., I've seen how traditional healthcare system failed my patients: long waits to see a provider, long wait times in the waiting room, rushed visits, feeling like a number without any true patient-doctor relationship, getting called with the incorrect pronoun, mistreated due to not speaking English fluently and dealing with hidden fees and surprise bills. The list goes on. These frustrations only reinforced my desire to change how care is delivered.

Having experienced different healthcare systems, I want to bring the best of Taiwan’s model—affordable, accessible, and high-quality care—to New York City.
I founded U Care MD to provide what I believe is missing in traditional healthcare: accessible, affordable and personal care. As a family medicine doctor, my focus is on offering high-quality and comprehensive care that truly values the patient-doctor relationship and centers on your unique needs.

With lived experience in the LGBTQIA+ community, I've seen the gaps in LGBTQIA+ care. I've seen patients being marginalized and mistreated by mainstream healthcare, and that’s why I’m so passionate about creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive space at U Care MD. My mission is simple: to ensure that every patient feels truly seen, heard, and cared for, regardless of ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, or cultural background.

At U Care MD, you will receive the highest quality of care, in an environment where your unique identity is embraced, not just acknowledged.

My Practice Style
I practice evidence-based medicine. I won't sell you overpriced products or make unproven medical advice.
I believe in shared decision-making to make small, meaningful tweaks to your personalized care, ensuring it aligns with your needs and goals.

I’m a minimalist when it comes to healthcare. I don’t believe in over-treating or ordering unnecessary tests. I prefer to encourage lifestyle changes first, before jumping to medication

I'm an efficiency junkie. I value your time as much as my own, and I’m committed to making healthcare as simple and accessible as possible for you.

I believe in prevention before treatment. By prioritizing healthy lifestyle, early screenings, and education, we can reduce health risks and avoid extensive treatments and lower healthcare costs in the long run.

I truly value trauma-informed care. I understand how trauma can affect a person’s health and well-being, and I make it a priority to be culturally sensitive, ensuring that every patient feels supported, respected, and comfortable throughout their care.
